Solving the Bedroom Problem

When we registered for our wedding, out friends told us to “register for everything!”  I guess that wasn’t the best plan for us.  We registered for very pretty, red and gold bedding, but along with the china, and silverware, we didn’t get much of it.  I think we received one pillow sham.  So we made our bed with a set of sheets (which we did receive) and my comforter from college.  It was lovely.
Finally in 2007, I convinced my husband to let us take advantage of the employee bedding purchase program through the company I worked for.  All white, sheets, pillow cases, duvet insert, duvet, for about $250—what a deal!!
During an after Christmas sale at Crate & Barrel a few years ago, I decided it was time to add some color to our room.  So I purchased a set of red pillow shams from the Marimekko Tamara Red set shown above (no longer available).   But they were all alone in our room, and I was doing a poor job of trying to bring the room together.
And then, this weekend, 28. months. later. inspiration found me!  With gift cards and store credit, I was able to gather all of the above items!
I feel like this is a place in which we sleep now.  Before it was just the place we sleep.  Now it is our bedroom and we can feel comfortable there.  (I’m also secretly hoping for a more restful night’s sleep now that the curtains are in place!)

A Review

Oh my goodness the cooking…

That was really hard work.  I cooked the May Whole Foods menu from Once a Month Mom.  After I finished Sunday night, I was reading the site, and found out that they post the menu on the first of the month, you shop for the items throughout the month (find the sales, etc.) and then you cook it at the end of the month.  Whoops!  Guess I should have read that first and cooked the April menu.

Then, I was reading some of the posts by the contributors to the site how they use OAM cooking.  They cook the meals, but they don’t intend to eat from it every night.  They use it based on the schedule, so if they have a busy night, they pull out one of the freezer meals and then don’t have to worry about prepping and cooking a meal.


Considering this.  It may change how I do this going forward.  The point is to get my stress level down regarding cooking and the kitchen.  I will tell you, I was so stressed shopping on Friday night.  It took me about an hour and a half, and I was looking at everything going,
1. There’s no way this will feed us all month and
2. This is going to cost waaay to much money—so
3. We’ll have to spend more money, over the budget, to supplement not having enough food! 

Also, since I didn’t have enough room in the freezer (granted, I do have a big bag of ice in there that is taking up a bit of room), I have a lot of food left in the freezer that did not get cooked—so we have to eat on that over the next few days.  3 lbs of ground beef, and 7. lbs. of. chicken.  

It will definitely help us out at the end of the month when I get my wisdom teeth out, because I won’t be worried about what my husband will eat, and the instructions for reheating are on each item.

I hope that in the end, it will be worth it, but wow. 

A Trip to Denver

WithLovebyKitty: We started talking about making a trip to Denver earlier this year.  Then one of my Colorado cousins got engaged, with a wedding set for April, and it gave us the perfect opportunity to make a quick trip!  My sweet husband loves baseball, so when ever we get a chance to be in a baseball town, we always make sure to visit the ballpark.  They were giving away free tees!  This was the view outside the church where my cousin got married.  The drive from Denver was beautiful.  We love brunch, and this was the place to go.  We had to wait an hour, so we had high expectations by the time we got to the diner bar.  Holy cow.  If you are ever in Denver, you must put this on your restaurant list.  And have the Carne Asada Eggs Benedict.  You won't be disappointed.

Anchors Away My Boys!

Two years ago, we had the opportunity to stay at my former boss's home on Cape Cod over Thanksgiving.  It was a perfect get away at the time--no internet, no cable!  This is a gift for their home.  Not the dishes.  Those are mine.  The napkins!  When I saw Dear Stella's Anchors Away, I knew they would make a great addition to their summer nights on the Cape.

Of course, when I found out about "the Cape", I had not been working there long, and my boss had to travel to Boston for a funeral.  I asked what hotel he needed me to book, and since he was traveling, he quickly emailed me back and said, "don't need a hotel, have a house on the cape."  I'm sure he was giving his blackberry a "duh" look while he responded to my email.  From then on, we only ever referred to it as "the Cape", which I'm pretty sure actually means: escape-from-this-crazy-work-environment-where-no-one-ever-leaves-me-alone-so-I-have-to-go-to-"the-Cape"-to-get-anything-done.  But he was right.  You can hear yourself think there.

I purchased the fabric for the napkins from Fat Quarter Shop (one of my fave online quilt fabric shops!).

Homemade napkins are a simple way to add color to your table.  As long as I'm entertaining a small group, I always make plans to whip up a few napkins to customize my party.  Quilting fabric is much more durable than some of the cotton fabric you can buy at the craft store.  And one fat quarter is the perfect size for a napkin.
